Welcome in EU (and EFTA).
This page is currently under construction. The logo is from my old blog Saas on Paas, which I closed down.
Below I'm listing what I'm doing to move to a more ethical way of living: considering what I purchase with every purchase I make.
For now, I am sharing what alternatives (these and others) I found to be valuable in my personal life.
I live in The Netherlands, some choices are typically Dutch.
Digital and online life
Everything I use online is difficult to grasp and fully disover where it comes from. Especially when a service is global, it runs on technology from all around the world.
In this category I consider the things I use and the things I pay for.
Squarespace (1, private blog):
I ended my subscription for my personal blogging domain a few years ago (saasonpaas.com), but still paid for the domain. I started this (in EU) domain early 2025.
Alternatives for domain hosting are countless, too many to mention. Just pay the company you want to give your money to.
Squarespace (2, voluntary work website):
Google had a very good offering for hosting the KRC Rolling domain, Google Business helped a lot in becoming findable on Google Search. Google decided last year to move all their domains to Squarespace as well (coincidently), so I also moved this domain to Infomaniak Domains.
List of replacements:
Microsoft Office 365 Family >> Replaced with Infomaniak kSuite+
Netflix / Sky Showtime / Disney >> To be replaced by Videoland and NLZIET
Alixpress, Amazon >> This one is interesting, because what you find here, you can find the same for a bit more in localized webshops.
Also Bol.com, Coolblue and Tweakers are here to help.
Spotify >> Great!
MSN / Hotmail / Gmail >> Infomaniak, Proton, Tuta, Soverin, and others
Twitter / X >> Deleted my account
Meta / Facebook / WhatsApp / Instagram >> Planned to be deleted.
Technology
The Computer Technology category is hard to replace with European alternatives, so I need to compromise.
Personal Computer
I used to prefer Lenovo, HP and Dell for home computing. There aren't many alternatives from Europe. And it's impossible to buy a fully European made computer.
So I chose my all time favourite from when I worked at a computer shop in Delft (NL): ASUS, from Taiwan.
The ASUS NUC 14 Pro is up and running, using my older LG 4k monitor.
Solid State Disk
I'm re-using my Smasung 512GB NVME PCIexpress 3.0 Samsung 512 GB SSD from my old Lenovo Yoga 910 Ultrabook.
This harddrive is 8 years old, but it is still perfect for what I need. Maybe, I need to start saving for a replacement.
Random Access Memory
Since I wanted a small PC with a lot of capavI can use for running databases and Virtual Machines I chose t go for a Workstation kind of amaount of RAM.
I learned Goodram was 1 of 2 European storage manufacturers, so I deced to go with 64 GB.
Operating System
Ever since my own first computer (Windows 98) I used Windows all the time. I had grown fond of it. But professionally I also learned to work with Oracle and RedHat Linux. Linux is not something I fear. Soon I will go dualboot with OpenSUSE or Ubuntu to see if that can become my European preferred and go-to Operating System.
Personal Phone
When the time is right to replace my aging Xiaomi, I will probably buy a Fairphone, Shiftphone or Nothing phone, because with e/OS i will be able to replace Google based Android with Open Source Android and still have a great experience. But this is still in the planning phase.
Shopping and groceries
Watch out! About 50 or 60% of groceries (brands) in the Netherlands is owned by or coming from companies outside Europe. I don't need mango's, Heinz or Coca Cola. I will do with apples, Gouda's Glorie or Douwe Egberts (is that still OK?). What I need is prices of groceries to go down and they must be fairtrade, ethical and be produced as close to hoem as possible.
Brands
I made a list of supermarket grocery brands and who owns them.
